10 Yarny Holiday Decor Projects!

The holiday season is upon us, ladies and gentlemen! I don't know about you but it feels like this year has FLOWN by, and my brain still hasn't made the transition to "holiday mode" just yet.

The holidays can be the furthest thing from relaxing, with people frantically rushing around like maniacs to complete their gift shopping, crowded and loud holiday parties, entertaining and hosting family members, and the nightmares of holiday travel. Sometimes the best way to escape the craziness of the holidays is to do what us knitters and crocheters do best: to sit back, relax, and craft!

Us fiber enthusiasts love the process of creating something with our own two hands. It allows us to connect on a deeper level to our craft, and brings so much gratification. My favorite way to get into the holiday spirit while steering clear of the madness has been to create my own holiday decorations. It gives me much-needed time to escape, get creative, turn on the holiday tunes with a good cup of coffee, and reflect on my favorite holiday memories as a kid with my family and friends.

Here's a list of my 10 favorite knitted and crocheted decor projects for this holiday season. I've made some yarn recommendations for each project, but many of these projects can be worked up with yarn from your stash. I encourage you to take a step back from the holiday frenzy whenever you get a chance and immerse yourself in your craft. It will help you feel so much more connected to holidays, and you'll have some adorable, personalized decorations to cherish for the years to come!

#iknitforharvey Round Up

WOW, WOW, WOW! You guys really are something else! Over the last couple of months, with your and Blue Sky Fibers' help, we we're able to raise over $7,500.00 for the students of KIPP with the #iknitforharvey campaign..Yes, that is seven, five, zero, zero. I really couldn't be more thankful to be a part of this community.

So Doug, Huck, and I headed down to Houston last week to visit KIPP DREAM on Friday morning to deliver the AWESOME stuffies you guys knitted (there is some serious talent in this world!). The students were amazing and found this super cool book about knitting that I read to them and we talked even more about knitting afterwards and I'm pretty sure I convinced a few of them to join the club (knitter's unite!).

Well then we got to the main part of the assembly - the stuffies. Words can't explain how much those Royal Petites meant to these kids, but I'm going to try. I so badly wish that you all could've been there to see their faces light up once they got their animals (I mean, c'mon, look at those faces!) It was one of those moments that made me realize why Jimmy Beans does what we do.

From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of our entire Jimmy Beans team, I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped us get these guys knitted and to deserving kids. We are so lucky.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Roundup

Our lovely Mindy!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Once again, our Jimmy Beans family pulled through! As many of you know, in October we created the Pom Pom Hat Kit in honor of our very own Mother Hen, Mindy. Mindy was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of 2016 and since then has successfully entered remission. Because Mindy is so special to us, we wanted to do something special for her. Which is where the hat kit came in…

The designer, Jenny Nelson,

So How Much Have We Raised?

Together, we managed to raise over $3,500 to donate to Moms On The Run and We are so thankful for all of the support from you and are so lucky to be a part of such a loving and caring community.

Still want to support the cause? There are still kits available!

Knitspiration: Stranger Knits...

Solemate in "Weirder Stuffs"

Stranger Knits...

To celebrate the premiere of Stranger Things on Netflix, we bring you “Weirder Stuffs,” a custom-dyed Solemate color inspired by the show. Wondering what our knitted things might look like if we suddenly found ourselves lost in the dreaded “Upside-Down,” we ventured into the depths of our Project Log and found the perfect shawl!

The Walking Dead Shawl by Kristen Ashbaugh-Helmreich

The Walking Dead Shawl’s dramatic shape and gaping holes provide a deconstructed look that would be right at home in the mystical other-world and, using 2 skeins of Solemate, is large enough to double as a much-needed security blanket!

And if the name didn’t give it away, it also provides the perfect project for all of you TWD fans out there!

Monika's Dragonhide Shawl in Chinese Fireball
Harry Potter anyone?
Monika of merryClusters recently released a collection of patterns inspired by the books.

The Knitted Wit Dragonhide Shawl features short-row wedges and spikes reminiscent of the dragons’ wings from the Triwizard Tournament. And while the blue color scheme is certainly representative of the Swedish Short-Snout, we are reminded of another dragon that made an icy splash in another favorite show of ours…

Monika's Venemous Tentacula in Shepherd Worsted Flames

And for something truly creepy-crawly, the Venemous Tentacula Cowl’s tentacles are meant to be a fun (and possibly poisonous!) color. Using one skein of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted, the length of the tentacles will depend on which color you choose. Read all about the Venomous Tentacula plant in “One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi” by Phyllida Spore. They are actually quite affectionate plants – until they start strangling you!

Happy Knitting!

The Soul Behind The Skein

Earlier this year, we invited you to join us on “Jimmy’s Journey to 15” - a 15 day video series that highlighted our fifteen years in business thus far. Boy, does time fly.

...And so do we!

*drum roll, please*
(knitting needles can be used as drumsticks, right?)

This November, we are excited to bring you Season 2 of Jimmy’s Journey! We’ll be packing our bags and hopping on a plane to get a firsthand look into the lives of our friends in the international fiber arts community, without whom our story couldn’t be told.

The legacy of what we cast on doesn't just begin in that moment, but starts with the hands that make our craft possible. We wanted to bring you a "behind the skeins" look at what type of work that goes into the tools we use, but more importantly, a look into the lives that create them. Because these individuals help us tell our story, we wanted to tell theirs.

For a sneak peek, check out the video below!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month & Mindy's Journey

In August 2016, our beloved JBW employee and "mother hen," Mindy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After undergoing surgery and treatments, she has successfully entered remission and won her battle against cancer. We are so grateful to have Mindy with us, as she is truly the glue that holds Jimmy Beans together.

Watch Mindy's Journey

Reflecting on her experience, Mindy has expressed so much gratitude for the breast cancer organizations that assisted her during her diagnosis and treatments. She is especially grateful for for providing her with an abundance of information and resources after her diagnosis, along with a local breast cancer organization called Moms On The Run that provided her with comfortable clothing and support while she was going through treatments.

We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and this October we have decided to pay it forward and join the the millions of women (and men!) in the U.S. who have fought or are still fighting this vicious disease. We've teamed up with Lorna's Laces to create our new Mindy's Hat Kits for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Mindy's Hat Kit includes one skein of Lorna's Laces Cloudgate in our October limited edition colorway, "Ta-Tas," along with two interchangeable fur pom-poms that can snap on and off of the finished hat. The kit also features a beautiful cabled hat pattern, designed by Jenny Nelson. For every Mindy's Hat kit sold throughout the month of October, we will be donating $5 to the breast cancer organizations that helped our sweet Mindy during her battle. 50% of the donations will be given to the national, and the other 50% will be given to our own Reno-based Moms On The Run organization.

Breast cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers found in women throughout the U.S. and around the world. Together, we can give back to the wonderful organizations that provide so much for the women fighting their own battle against breast cancer.

This October, we knit for Mindy, our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and friends. Who do you knit for?

"Mama Mindy"
