Downton Abbey KAL Week #5

Hello everyone!

I hope you have all had a fabulous week. Mine was busy (deadlines galore) but overall good. :)

So this week is an extremely light knitting week. I am doing this for three reasons:

1) I want to give as many people as possible the chance to catch up so we can all finish together over the next couple of weeks.

2) The most natural stopping point in this section is after 4 rows, so before we begin the final border patterning, I wanted to give you all a nice easy week to relax and enjoy some simple knitting.

3) Although I don't want to assume that any of you are football fans, I am sure some people will be busy preparing for and watching the Super Bowl tomorrow, so I didn't want to overload anyone.

For those of you who have already stopped increasing, please do not to the increases in this week's pattern. For those of you worried about running out of yarn, don't worry, this week is the last 4 increases in each section that will be done. I've mentioned before that we are aiming to get to 78 stitches between markers. This week we will complete all of the increases. If you are a few weeks behind and would like to slow your increases, I've posted some alternate instructions for that in weeks 3 & 4 of the Ravelry forums. The posts are as follows:

Week 3, Post # 381:

Week 4, Post #115:

These will get you to 65 sts between needles. Then you would follow this week's instructions without increases. Hopefully this helps some of you who are working through your yarn a bit faster.

Also, these directions are for both beginner and intermediate. Everyone is doing the same exact thing this week. Sorry to be so boring, but it had to be done. Because of this, the knitting this week is really not a mystery at all. So, that said, I have incorporated a few clues later in the post to give you something to watch for in tonight's episode. I recommend you brew yourself a cup of tea (which I will be doing) or a glass of wine or your drink of choice (cheers to you, and enjoy on my behalf) and follow along with the fun clues anyway just for kicks. Since the knitting this week is the same for everyone and is very simple, feel free to knit ahead today if you'd like so you can relax and enjoy tonight's episode. You deserve it!

Week 5 Knitting (both Beginners & Intermediates):

Row 1: k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2: knit

*repeat rows 1 & 2 once more. (78 sts between markers)

And that's all for this week's knitting folks!

Some of you may be wondering how much more knitting there is. Here is the short answer: Intermediates will have 8-16 (or possibly more if desired) rows of knitting. The intermediate border pattern is an 8-row repeat and we will be doing it twice. The beginner's border pattern is a two row repeat and we will be doing it the same number of rows in theory, however, there is more flexibility in the beginner pattern to do fewer rows if needed. If you think you are running too short of yarn, the beginner pattern will be a good choice since it's easier to customize. Just something to keep in mind for next week.

Now, here are the fun clues for Episode 5 to drink your tea or (ahem) other beverage of choice this evening:

Prompt #1: When Violet and Isobel have a disagreement, demurely take a sip and proclaim, "Indeed!"

Prompt #2: Anytime Thomas pressures Baxter to collude with him, take a drink with raised eyebrows.

Prompt #3: When Edith receives some upsetting news, take a gulp and say, "Poor Edith!"

Prompt #4: When Anna and Bates have a nice night out, take a sip and say, "Good for them!"

Prompt #5: When Rose debuts her birthday surprise for Lord Crawley, take a drink with your pinky in the air.

Prompt #6: When Rose is caught by Mary doing something unladylike, demurely take a sip and exclaim, "Kids these days!"

These are just for fun of course and not required, I hope you enjoy the episode. :)

Because there is no mystery in this week's knitting, I will not be posting an episode guide tomorrow. If you have questions about the knitting, please let me know!

Happy knitting everyone!
Kristen

  1. Thanks for this week's easy clues! I won't feel guilty about watching the Superbowl. Is now the time to add additional rows to make the shawl deeper? I still have roughly 200 yards of my yarn and would like a shawl that reaches closer to waist length than mid-shoulder.

  2. How critical to the upcoming border is having 78 sts between markers? I'm afraid I'm off count. Will we be able to do the border with any even number?

  3. LOL! A true drinking game for super bowl weekend. Go Broncs!

Thanks, Kirtsen. I was looking for some knitting to do while I watch the game!

P.S. Can I just say that one of the primary outcomes of the KAL has been to addict me to LL's Honor? I can't stop cuddling this shawl. Ordered some more last night in the Feb colorway!

  4. About how much yarn should be left before starting Week #5? I am thinking I may need to order another Lorna's Laces Honor Bated Breath. Is anyone else running out of yarn?

  6. Looks like I will run out this week. Don't know if I want to invest another $25 plus shipping. Guess I will rip out and use the yarn on something else. Isn't there 3 weeks left? How could 2 skeins have ever been enough.

  7. It's interesting the negative comments are from anonymous people or is it one person. I was out of yarn too but emailed Kristin and learned I was knitting too loosely so I started over and will have plenty of yarn. I have learned so much with this Mystery KAL and it's been fun. I trust myself more with my knitting and realized that I don't have to see to believe. Plus the photos on Ravelry are fun to see how it is turning out with different yarns and colors. I may never make another shawl but I have new stitches in my arsenal. ---- Barb, from Susanville. I will bring the shawl in the next time I'm in Reno.

  8. Interesting how certain people's upbringing - or should I say lack thereof - is revealed by their comments. Thank you Kristen for the MKAL. It is fun!

  9. I ran out of yarn after this week's knitting, so I had to bind off using some scrap yarn that sort of matched. I am still trying to figure out a way to wear this/ I would love to see pics of other completed shawls with ideas. That being said - I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in this KAL. I (and many others) have a lot of time and money invested in this project and I don't think the effort was made to have this planned and executed as it should have been. This yarn was too expensive to end up with something that won't be used, so I am hoping for creative ideas so I don't have to rip it out to make something I will use. If I had to do over again, I would make it half as wide and twice as deep. This keeps me in the proper yardage range and makes it wearable. I doubt I will participate again, sad, because last years was fun and went smoothly.

  10. As an inexperienced knitter, I am slow doing this, I have also just changed my way of knitting, am not great with computer either, and I've been away this last Sunday. Good and bad is found in all of this. I am wondering if you will be sorting beginner from intermediate directions and grouping beginner together so I would be able to eventually print only beginner and complete this. Help! I am overwhelmed. Thank you. MaryAnn

  11. Mary Ann-

The nature of this KAL being a choose your own adventure doesn't really allow me to separate the clues because the idea is that at any point you could switch from beginner to intermediate or visa versa. However, my recommendation would be to print the clue, and then just highlight the instructions for your part, that way you don't even have to look at the other parts if you don't want to. Another option is to copy and past just the beginner sections into a word doc and print it from there. That way you are only selecting the parts you want to follow. I hope one of these suggestions works for you! Best of luck!

  12. Think I will make this into a longer version after the last clue. Actually I'm happy and thank you!

  13. Kristen, I have finished week five and finally caught up. There is a problem with my stitch count. Should I attempt to do additional repeats of wk 5 in order to even out the stitch count, or leave it alone and it will work out. Have plenty of yarn since I purchased additional in the very beginning. Love your work and the lovely yarn. Ann, aka the Woo.

  14. Hi Ann!

Can I ask what your current stitch count is? That will help me give a better answer to your question.

    Thanks!

  16. The pattern naturally lends itself to a geometry dash pause after four rows. Before diving into the final border patterning, I wanted to provide you with a relaxing and enjoyable week of simple knitting. Consider it a little breather in our creative journey.
