Every once in a while, there are women who inspire us to keep trying to improve ourselves for the better and prove that no matter what life you've been given, you can make it your own. Iris Schreier is one of those women.
Iris grew up in Manhattan, NYC on 79th street on the west side! In a previous life, she worked at various corporations in New York City for 20+ years in a variety of publishing positions ranging from editor to internet new business development (McGraw-Hill, Wiley, Scholastic).
These days, she runs the super successful yarn and design company, Artyarns. Her daily schedule seems pretty hectic! She usually works at home for a few hours before hitting the gym for a bit, then heads into the office/factory around 11. Believe it or not, knitting and designing only takes up about 10-20% of her time, the rest is used to help run the business.
And what an amazing job she's done. If you've seen their Facebook page, you'll know that Iris is in LOVE with Facebook and it is her latest addiction. They continually have new patterns, products and project ideas streaming in!!
One of the most amazing things I admire about Iris has been her super healthy lifestyle shift. Through nutrition, supplements and weight training, she has changed her day to day quality of life dramatically (and she can do a shoulder stand)!! Iris told me that she still firmly believes that you can get healthier as you get older....
And what does Iris have up her sleeve for us next? Well, she is coming out with the first in a series of new books with Lark in March 2012 which will pick up some of the beautiful graphic elements created by Officelab for Artyarns in Project Re-Brand with American Express. Check out the links at the bottom of the post to find more information about their work with American Express.
But here is our new favorite little shiny thing! Artyarns has these amazingly stylish new "Shawl for All Seasons" Kits. They come in a sleek silver tin and are just stunning! Here are the different styles:
The good news is you can knit or crochet the shawl - whichever you prefer!
And the SUPER good news is that Artyarns is giving away one of these spectacular kits to one of our lucky readers. Here are the details:

I use the best quality materials I can afford and always look for projects that contain new stitches or patterns or colorwork I haven't done before
ReplyDeleteI would elevate my art simply by knitting a shawl. I have never knitted a shawl and winning this would be amazing. What would be more amazing would be finishing a shawl and modeling it for my knitting group. So, if I win a kit, I promise to knit and finish it and post pictures for all to see.
ReplyDeleteI try a technique I haven't tried before -- I have a mental list of things to try. I have one skein of ArtYarns (thanks to DDIL, but I haven't figured out how to make a baby something from it for her). I have never tried beading or sequins, so that definitely would be a new technique. (Intarsia is on my list -- need it for some toys!!)
ReplyDeleteHave been following Artyarns on facebook for a while now. I would love to elevate my knitting and win a kit!
ReplyDeleteI am new to knitting and Artyarns has inspired me.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by elevating my feet. I have to sit more now and keep my feet up so I am knitting more and the more I knit the better I become. So I elevate my feet in turn that has made me a better knitter. =)
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by using the best tools I can afford, and the best materials for the task at hand, and by trying new techniques whenever I can.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my knitting by being fearless in my knitting. I try new techniques. I hope to continue doing this. Hugs, molli
ReplyDeleteMy art is elevated every time I find a beautiful new yarn and Artyarns are works of art in and of themselves. I think this would be the most beautiful thing I could create for my daughters upcoming wedding.... :)
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by using quality materials and patterns.
ReplyDeleteJanet
You cannot help but to make something beautiful, when you start out with yarns that are as close to perfection, as those that Iris creates. They stir not only my heart, but my very soul.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by giving my passion all that I have. All of my love, kindness, blood, sweat, and tears. Each project is made with love - not because it was required. Each piece I remember making and each tells a story. I truly love great needles and great yarn - cashmere and silk, merino wools and alpaca. I treat my materials with love and kindness - much like I would my children. The finished projects are also treated kindly and are hand washed with lavendar soap. All of these things help elevate my art.
ReplyDeleteI have cashmere and the beaded mohair - in a beautiful burgundy, but I'm on the lookout for ThePerfectPattern, and I may have found it ....
ReplyDeleteI have never actually used an art yarn. I am a bit intimidated especially by the thick and thin yarns. I tend to like geometric, even lines in my knitting or crochet so I haven't tried them yet. To elevate my art I try to push myself to try new techniques. But now, I think I may hop over to Ravelry and look for art yarn specific patterns...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to elevate my art; one of these kits would do that and winning would so lift my spirits.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by continuing to learn new techniques with beautiful yarns like Artyarns and by learning from wonderfully inspiring people likeIris.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by learning about knitting techniques that are new to me. Sometimes it is a slow process trying to get something just right and I feel like I spend more time unknitting than knitting, but the payoff is that I am able to create more beautiful projects (while learning what not to do on future projects.)
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by constantly challenging myself to try something different, by looking at the world with eyes wide open to see beauty and inspiration all around me, to allow myself to design my projects freely, without constraints. Most important to believe in myself.
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art everyday by looking at nature and then playing with yarn.
ReplyDeleteI am new to Knitting but Jimmy Beans has been helping me get going and this shawl looks absolutely gorgeous! Would love the oppurtunity to knit it!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered "ArtYarns" in Where Women Create - I can't wait to get my hands and my knitting needles on some. That is how I will elevate my art.
ReplyDeleteTerry
2 yrs ago I was only knitting scarves. Then I learned several new tricks and made over 60 hats, 40 pr. of socks, etc. This summer I completed my first sweater and a lovely wedding shawl for my son's fiancee'. I just keep elevating my art! I would love to try one of your shawls next!
ReplyDeleteI elevate my art by "feeding my brain" with new ideas, patterns, techniques and trying to always learn something new.
ReplyDeleteElevate by definition is to raise the spirits, to put in high spirits. Any day that I can knit and feel all kinds of fibers, that elevates my day to a higher plane of total bliss.
ReplyDeleteArtyarns is truly art as is knitting with this fabulous pallette of gorgeous fibers!
ReplyDeleteI am working to elevate my art by learning to spin!! So excited. Hope to make yarn as wonderful as theirs some day.
